At its recent meeting, the Board of Directors of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), approved
the association’s position on the status and rights of teachers worldwide. Citing the unique role education plays in

TESOL declares position on English language learners with special education needs
Alexandria, Virginia (April 2007)
– At its recent meeting, the Board of Directors
of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages,
Inc. (TESOL), approved the association’s position
on the identification of English language learners with
special education needs. Noting the disproportionate
representation of culturally and linguistically diverse
students in special education, TESOL advocates that
appropriate assessment, culturally responsive expertise
and purposeful collaboration among educators, and clear
communication with family members are essential in identifying
English language learners with special education needs. Read
