Position Statement
on the Status of, and Professional Equity for,
the Field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

It is TESOL’s position that all educational authorities,
government agencies, and academic institutions recognize the
field of TESOL as a unique academic and professional discipline
that is distinct from, but on par with, other academic subjects.
Accordingly, TESOL recommends special and unique designation

Title: Grammaring

Overview: Teaching grammar often means giving students grammar
rules and then having students practice the rules in drills and
exercises. Students do learn about grammar this way, but they
don't necessarily learn to use it for their own communicative
purposes. Grammaring is a dynamic process. It is what enables
ESL/EFL students to use grammar structures accurately,
meaningfully, and appropriately. In this Virtual Seminar, we will
learn about grammaring, how it is learned, and how to teach it.

Title: The Evolving Architecture of CBI
Presenters: Marguerite Ann Snow and Donna Brinton

Overview: Content-based instruction (CBI) is the integration of
selected content with language teaching aims. Applicable to both
ESL and EFL instructional settings, CBI is a flexible approach
that is constantly evolving. This seminar provides descriptions
of current models of CBI, discusses the similarities and
differences between CBI and ESP, and presents several case
studies of CBI implemented in both ESL and EFL classes. In this
seminar, participants consider
* how the models may be implemented with adolescent through
adult learners
* which proficiency levels are most appropriate for CBI
* which issues and challenges exist to effective
implementation
* what outcomes can be expected in terms of student learning
and motivation
