Dear Affiliate and Interest Section leaders
A Message from Shelley Wong, Incoming TESOL President
As your President-Elect, I look forward to joining you and thousands of other English language educators from around the world as we celebrate “Worlds of TESOL: Building Communities of Practice, Inquiry, and Creativity” in New York City, New York, USA.
I am so pleased to see how advocacy has grown and evolved within TESOL over the years, and as leaders within TESOL, each of you have a critical role to play in helping to identify and shape the issues TESOL acts upon. Since we only get to assemble as a field once a year, I urge you to use your meetings at the New York convention to discuss the important professional issues in the field.
John Segota, TESOL’s Advocacy and Professional Relations Manager, will be meeting with you during your workshops and assemblies at the convention. With the next meeting of the TESOL Board of Directors in June, I would like to see some of the issues from your convention discussions on the agenda.
My hope is you as the leadership of TESOL really engage with the “grassroots” in continually identifying and discussing professional issues to bring to the attention of the Board of Directors and that the Board responds through position statements and other actions during its meetings throughout my presidential year.
I look forward to seeing you in New York City!
Sincerely,
Shelley Wong
Incoming TESOL President

Title: Grammaring
Presenter: Diane Larsen-Freeman
Date: Wednesday, May 7, 2008
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. EST (2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. GMT)
Overview: Teaching grammar often means giving students grammar
rules and then having students practice the rules in drills and
exercises. Students do learn about grammar this way, but they
don't necessarily learn to use it for their own communicative
purposes. Grammaring is a dynamic process. It is what enables
ESL/EFL students to use grammar structures accurately,
meaningfully, and appropriately. In this Virtual Seminar, we will
learn about grammaring, how it is learned, and how to teach it.

Title: The Evolving Architecture of CBI
Presenters: Marguerite Ann Snow and Donna Brinton
Date: Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. EST (2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. GMT)
Overview: Content-based instruction (CBI) is the integration of
selected content with language teaching aims. Applicable to both
ESL and EFL instructional settings, CBI is a flexible approach
that is constantly evolving. This seminar provides descriptions
of current models of CBI, discusses the similarities and
differences between CBI and ESP, and presents several case
studies of CBI implemented in both ESL and EFL classes. In this
seminar, participants consider
* how the models may be implemented with adolescent through
adult learners
* which proficiency levels are most appropriate for CBI
* which issues and challenges exist to effective
implementation
* what outcomes can be expected in terms of student learning
and motivation
